It took a while but it is officially freezing in NYC! So, what better time to think about head gear, i.e. hats and wraps? My must-have-piece for this season is the The Unisex Circular Scarf from American Apparel. I just love the versatile tube-shaped fabric. It can be worn in many ways, from a basic scarf to a head band, or even a one shoulder dress. With this scarf, you can get a lot of bang for your $28 bucks.
I am also in love with the oversized slouchy beret trend. This hot item can be seen everywhere from TV and fashion runways to the city streets. I’ve always had a problem finding gloves. I have this thing about keeping my wrists covered and warm during the winter. I think it has something to do with the fact that when I was younger my mom could never find coats with long enough sleeves for her 6’ little girl so she would make mittens out of socks that were longer. First and foremost, the pants will always be long enough and you won’t feel the need to tug at your too-short sleeves all the time. But our clothing is beneficial for tall women in less obvious ways as well. For example, the darts will start and end at the right place, the jacket length will be proportional for your body and the waistband on the dress will be at your natural waist – not pressing against your rib cage. Our customers range in height from petite to tall, though I believe we serve a larger percentage of tall women than you would expect to see if you walked down the street. I think the reasons for this are because being tall is part of the brand story (i.e. I started the business because I was too tall to wear off-the-rack pants) and also because there are so few options for professional attire for tall women. Our tall customers are some of the happiest women in the showroom because they are so pleased with the fit of our clothes.

How does your service work, how do your clients receive your products, and what is the process?

Clients visit one of our Design Studios, either in Plymouth Meeting, PA or Emmeryville, CA. They enter our Virtual Fitting Room where we take their measurements. We then use the www.indidenim.com website to help them customize every aspect of a pair of perfectly fitting jeans.
Dawn Verbrigghe of Moi-Meme Attire
The process begins with a measuring appointment in our Manhattan showroom (measuring appointments can be made conveniently through our website at www.moi-meme.com). During your appointment, one of our Style Consultants helps you select the most flattering and appropriate style, fabric and lining color - taking into consideration your unique body shape, work environment and professional goals. Privately, the Style Consultant takes a comprehensive 20 body measurements, five garment measurements and a handful of photographs. We keep your measurements on file so you may easily reorder without having to be re-measured.
Your order is then given to our tailors who craft your individual garments. Once your clothing is complete, you will be contacted and asked to return for a fitting appointment. During your fitting, our seamstress will hem your pants to the height of your heels and complete alterations to your garments, as required. From measuring to final delivery, your perfect-fit custom clothing is only four weeks away.

We at Tall Fashionista are all about the fit. We believe a trend or designer label means nothing if what it isn't fitted properly. We got in touch with custom clothing manufacturers Dawn Verbrigghe of Moi-Meme Attire, a custom suiting business, and custom jean retailer Rob Weber of Intellifit.
How and why did you get into the custom clothing business?
Rob Weber of IntellifitWe started in 2000 with an on-line service to offer custom made clothes - initially dress shirts, slacks and khakis. We also started a custom clothes party concept at the time, and had a great deal of interest. The problem we ran into, though, was reliably and consistently getting good measurements. Everyone took them differently. As a result, we developed the Intellifit Virtual Fitting Room - the world's only 3D full body scanner that takes measurements of a person, fully clothed.

Before founding Moi-Même, I worked at a downtown Manhattan firm where suits were necessary for client meetings. I had a terrible time finding pant suits that fit because I am too tall to fit into pre-hemmed pants. So, I started asking friends and colleagues where to find a great-fitting suit. Invariably, they told me the same thing, “I don’t know, but when you find out, come back and tell me. So, I resolved to find a way to offer great-fitting suits that are stylish yet office-appropriate, at reasonable prices. Custom clothing provided the best opportunity to get the fit just right. Following nearly two years of research and product development, we launched the first collection in October 2007 and now offer custom clothing ranging from traditional suits to tailored dresses.

NY Fashion Week Trend Watch - The Jumpsuit

NY fashion revealed some ever-evolving trends like the reincarnation of the ‘70s-inspired jumpsuit -- not the aviator/mechanic or prisoner kind. Think disco; soft and slouchy (satin and silk) or cool cotton for a chic look that is elegant and elongating. Stella McCartney, Max Azria and Tommy Hilfiger have some fun and flirty designs this season. Jumpsuits are an easy choice for the same reason dresses are: one item of clothing and you’re out the door, solving the problem of what to wear on top and bottom. For day, pair your jumpsuit with a short blazer and pumps; at night dress it up with jewelry and killer heels.Remember: jumpsuits must be a perfect fit for your body. They have the ability to make the body look long and lean but if it doesn't fit correctly you can end up looking like an escaped convict. This means that buying one off the rack, in my opinion, is risky. I suggest having a tailor nearby, either for alterations or to make one from scratch for you -- especially if you are tall. Some fashion insiders point out that jumpsuits tend to make your behind look long and flat, rather than plump and round. Another drawback is the time and effort it might take to go to the bathroom getting in and out of your ensemble.

Finding the right pair of jeans can be tough for most women. Adding height to this equation can make finding the right pair close to impossible. Having jeans custom made for your body can be a great alternative to off-the-rack denim. I find custom-made jeans to be ideal, as they make you feel and look good. Clothing customization is in high demand amongst fashionistas everywhere! TF suggests having a tailor take your measurements, for size assurance.

Tunic Tops
I recently went shopping with a friend who questioned my lack of purchases, since I had told her earlier that I was in need of some tops. I gave my usual spiel about fit. She then pointed to the tunic section of the department store we were in, and I thought to myself, why hadn't I thought of this in the past?
Next time you're shopping for tops in a clothing store that doesn't specialize in a tall fit, TF suggests you look for tunics. The salesperson explained that tunics end on shorter women below the hips. For a woman with a taller frame they would end (depending on your height) at the waist or below the waist, making tunics a perfect fit.

Maternity Clothing for Tall Women
We all know first hand that finding clothing for tall women can be a challenge. So imagine trying to find maternity clothing that fits. During my research I found that If your inseam is 32-34" you can get maternity pants from Old Navy, the Gap, JCPenney, and Motherhood. JCPenney & Old Navy carry 33" inseams and Gap carries a large selection of 34" inseams. If you are taller and need 36-37+" inseams, rgmaternity.com, momsmaternity.com, and tallgirlshop.com's maternity section carry styles with a 37" inseam.
If you need a longer length, I suggest you make your own clothing. Take a pair of pants or jeans that you already own to the tailor. It should be about $20 to have the original waistband cut off and an elastic waistband added.

Tall Fashionista's Tip of the Month—Invest in a Tailor, Part 3
Things To Remember
Spending a little more on a fabulous find is often worth it. Don’t be afraid to spend the extra few dollars on alterations, especially if it's a piece that will get a lot of usage.
Also, when getting jeans altered, remember to let your tailor know that you would like to retain the original hem.
Fun & Easy Alterations
Bottoms
If you have an old pair of high water pants or jeans, turn them into the on-trend Bermuda short. A local tailor can easily do this for about $20, which is a great deal when compared to the $150 it would cost for a new pair of designer shorts.
Tops
If you have an old sweater, top or T-shirt- attach a piece of luxurious fabric, ruffles, or an embellishment . This will cost approximately $10, plus the cost of materials, which is nothing when compared to a $100 top from a boutique.

How to Find a Tailor
Word of mouth is always good- ask friends, family, neighbors, or a recent bride. If you bought something at a store, ask the clerk if they offer alteration services. This can sometimes be pricey, if so, try your local dry cleaner- which usually has someone on the premises. If all else fails, you can also look up “alterations,” “seamstress,” “sewing,” or “tailor” in the Yellow Pages or local online listings.
Make sure your tailor/seamstress is Qualified
First, call the tailor and ask what he/she specializes in and what he/she usually works on-from simple hems to custom suiting from scratch.If you deem him/her qualified, ask how much she/he charges for the work you want done. Tailors are a must for everyone, but especially for tall women, as clothing looks and feels best when it is fitted properly. Celebrities and the ultra-rich have relied on tailors to update their wardrobes for years. A good tailor can not only make simple alterations, he/she can even custom make a designer piece at a fraction of the cost! My tailor re-created a pair of $750 D&G dress pants in three days, in denim, for $75.

Tall Fashionista Wardrobe Essentials, Part 1
There are some pieces every tall woman should have in her closet. Such items will last for years and won't need to be replaced with the passing trends. Before purchasing, make sure you select the right cuts and styles for your body shape.
Jeans and Pants
Pants
Two pairs- First, the classic black, wide-legged dress pant is a must. Also look for boot-cut or straight leg trousers that hit slightly below the waist.
Jeans
Two pairs; One figure-flattering pair for every day usage that is long enough to pair with flat shoes or a slight heel. Also look for one fashion forward pair for special occasions, maybe a bit more expensive than the everyday jeans.

T-shirts and Tank tops for the Long Torso
The T-shirt should be a basic in every woman's arsenal- something that can be used for layering or as a top paired with your favorite jeans. The basic T has been the hardest to find as a tall woman. I have been on the hunt for the perfect fitting T-Shirt for a long time. I've bought men's Ts in a size small and boys Ts in a size large.
Long sleeved or short Ts are a basic need for all women, especially for tall women, because a T can add length to clothing items that are too short. Layering allows tall women to extend wardrobe choices when tall sizes are not available. [As seen on Mandy Moore (5'10") above]
In general Ts should fall at the hips. However, when made of a stretch material that can either be scrunched up to a shorter length or stretched to a longer length. I always recommend that if you find something to your liking, purchase more than one in as many colors as your purse will allow.

Finding hosiery can be a daunting task for women of stature. If you have ever taken a pair of drugstore hosiery and stretched them for 20 minutes to the desired length, as I have, you know just how difficult it can be to find the correct size of hosiery. I have found that spending the extra money for a designer brand of hosiery makes a world of difference in fit and comfort. Swimwear for the Tall Diva
I love the summer- sunning on the beach in a fabulous swimsuit with a handsome gentleman handing me a cocktail. But how does a tall girl with a long torso find that fabulous swimsuit? There are more options for style, size and proportion in the realm of swim suit shopping these days.
One is the bikini, which is perfect for tall divas because separate pieces can be purchased to fit your top and bottom. If you are tall and thin a Brazilian or v-shape bottom will make long legs look even longer. If your hips are narrow gathered sides, ties, metal hardware, and patterns will draw attention to your hips and make you seem curvy.
If you are not naturally blessed, do not strive to achieve a supermodel figure, or are just not interested in brazen fashions, the tankini or “monokini” might be your choice for achieving swimwear nirvana. The tankini is visually more forgiving than the bikini. but not as conservative as a one piece. Also, the tankini separates the line of your body to make it appear more proportioned. Monokinis are the hottest trend in swimwear right now. The cut-out or cut-away affect is sexier than a one-piece and less revealing than a bikini. Also, the monokini provides more coverage in the stomach area but exposes more skin to the sun, for tanning purposes. Tall fashionistas can truly pull this trend off since we have more body to cover. It also helps to create the illusion of a curve at the hip.
A one piece suit designed for a long torso is ideal if you are looking for full coverage and maximum sun protection. The cut of the neckline and leg make a huge difference since low necklines and high-cut bottoms create the illusion of a well-proportioned body. A style from this season that I love is the Grecian one-shouldered swimsuit, which is very reminiscent of the '40s and '50s era. I found a lovely swim dress at Newport-news.com.
I wore the Shape fx® shirred skirted suit (in a tall size) in white during a recent trip to Miami. It was a huge hit when I wore it to the beach, a pool party, and on Ocean Drive for drinks.

The Maxi Dress
Finally the fashion tides have turned, sending a wave of longer hemlines upon our tall shores. We now have an alternative to alarmingly short skirts and dresses. Fashionistas are replacing their mini dresses with this season’s trend – the maxi dress. These long, flowing, floor-length dresses have been worn on the red carpet by the likes of Vanessa Hudgens and Eva Longoria. These dresses flatter taller, wider women because they offer enough coverage yet still manage to make women look romantic and feminine. Maxi dresses can easily be taken from formal to casual with a few easy accessory changes. The maxi paired with flip flops and a wide brim hat can be perfect beach attire. However, when paired with heels and elegant jewelry it can be perfect for a night out on the town.
If you are extremely tall look for gypsy-inspired dresses that add texture and weight, heightening the elegance of the look. Heavier body types should avoid light colors and small prints, as they can add width. Bold prints and colors camouflage flaws. Those with larger busts should look for dresses that have halter tops and stay away from spaghetti strap dresses - as they can draw attention to the wrong places.
If you are wondering where to buy your maxi dress this season, I picked up one from Victoria's Secret. They had many styles to choose from but I picked the strapless curvy jersey maxi dress, shown above. The dress fell right to my ankles (anything longer would be too long, in my opinion, and unbearable to walk in). The style I purchased is currently selling for $85.
